If we don’t protect what’s above, we can’t protect what’s below.
Demonstrating the relationship between the island grounds, the limestone, the caves with fresh drinking water in them and the traveling pollution is one of the biggest goal we have been working on for years through exploration, mapping and sharing the understanding of how everything is so vitally interconnected.
Our team @cristinazenato and @kewinlorenzen explore, map and provide vital information to local entities in the effort to explain and expand the knowledge of how protecting one, protects all the other, including us and our health.
Images of one of the many roads on the island of Grand Bahama where indiscriminate dumping happens on a regular basis.
The pollutants from this and other dumplings will make it through the limestone affecting the fresh water lens, sipping into the salt water and eventually traveling to the mangroves and ocean areas, affecting corals, fish, sharks and the ecosystems surrounding these islands.

Living Dinosaurs

A Caribbean Reef shark (sharks have been on this planet for nearly 450 millions years) and a LoggerHead turtle (110 million years) share the same space during a dive.

It is unfortunate that both of these species who have been on this planet way longer than any human being are suffering threats from our presence and our wrong doing.

I am happy that both sea turtles and sharks are protected in The Bahamas, but between legislation and enforcement there is still a big gap that needs filling through education and understanding of why we as a whole need to protect them, their food, their environment and not because a law says so.

Where could we collect those alternatives?
There are different ways but direct experience and following people who share the reality of being with sharks instead of the constant hyped media information would be a good starting point (but be careful with short videos shared without context and explanation)

Seeing images of people sharing the sharks' world should create a question about what we thought would be our "knowledge" about the subject.

Once we question that knowledge, we become more open to asking the correct questions and appreciate the answers we receive.

It requires an open mind and the strength to realize that sometimes we let our fears talk and that perhaps, we may be incorrect about something we thought to be true.

Sometimes we forget how much work we still have to do to change people’s perception about sharks and the issues we are facing from direct finning to environmental changes and depletion of fish stocks in the oceans.

Sharks have always played an important role in my life.
I have loved them since I was a kid, I wanted them for friends and companions.
I never thought a childhood dream would come true and that I would a life together with them.
I have worked hard for their protection, something we have accomplished in The Bahamas, and I am still working hard for their protection in other places.
I know about their plights and what is causing their demise but yesterday as I sat on the ocean floor with Crook and I was gently following the layout of her fins something excruciatingly painful washed over me like a crashing wave.
In my hands were these small fins I was so lovingly touching and I felt the brutality of what sharks go through when captured and finned.
You might think, well you should have known that; yes I did, I do, but in that moment I felt the pain and the reality together with the futility of such a barbaric act.
And my heart felt a deep pain for the demise of so many sharks out there still in need of help and a little relief for knowing that some are protected and will escape such destiny.
I have joined the @stopfinningeu campaign to help further the understanding of policies regarding sharks, fins and trade in Europe and I am honored to be able to be part of these voice.

Svartalfheim, in the Norse Mythology it’s the land of the dwarfs, a secret place below ground where the dwarfs live and craft their magnificent creations.
We gave this cave,we discovered and explored in 2020, this name as it presents a small entrance, sidemount only passageways where only dwarfs could live and after a few restrictions it opens up in amazingly decorated rooms, the creations of the dwarfs.
Dark and moody with insane clay banks, we love sharing this place with some of our selected cave diving guests.

During our dive yesterday I took these images of @cristinazenato guiding our guest Rick in some of the rooms.

“The center of attention”

Jitterbug is one of the most recognizable Tiger Sharks at Tiger Beach and as soon as she comes in she becomes the center of the attention of everyone diving.

I tried to capture her being that attention grabbing shark by sharpening her presence and blurring all of her surroundings as they blur for us when she comes into the scene.

If an image is worth a thousand words, this partial view of Cristina’s hook collection she has removed from her shiver of sharks through the years speaks to us more than that.
It shows the power of one; the capability of an individual to make a difference with each action
It creates awareness about the plight of sharks and their vulnerability due to our presence and actions.
The act of removing a hook becomes then the first stone cast in the water to create a ripple effect and reach farther than the action in itself could ever do.

This Caribbean Reef shark didn’t recognize she wasn’t swimming in her own school and tried to blend in the circles of jacks 😂

Jokes aside, these images are the reality of sharks sharing their world with everyone else, including us and they don’t swim around trying to bite and eat everything that moves.

“Eye contact”

Peggy makes eye contact as she swims by to acknowledge my presence and establish hers.
It is always interesting to notice how much fear there is in people when speaking about sharks, yet these animals are so aware of our presence and let us into their world and allows us much to come much closer than any other animal on land.

Shark diving operators are often criticized for their practices and business choices; however, shark diving tourism is one of the growing markets and expanding interest among divers. It has helped tremendously in the constant battle towards shark conservation across the world. Cristina will address some of the most common complaints and myths coming across her 29 years’ experience as shark operator and active conservationist

An active cave explorer, Cristina has completed explorations and connections others told her were not possible. During this presentation she will introduce us to some of her discoveries, present projects, some of her exploration techniques and technology, and how she uses a combination of them to bring these unknown areas to the surface for knowledge and understanding to protect them.

Once again, @belindabussottibeli delights us with her emblematic creations! Few years ago, the prolific artist turned to the creation of jewelry, via the Italian Florentine foundry, directly linked to her origins.

A way for her to highlight and immortalize, in bronze, the seahorse which was massacred at more than 20 million per year for recipes or other souvenir objects frozen in resin.

Amazing second day for the CZ educational and divi

Amazing second day for the CZ educational and diving liveaboard trip with a group from Italy.
They have had the opportunity to dive with Caribbean Reef, Nurse and Great Hammerhead.
They met some of the regulars sharks from Cristina and also attended two educational presentations about sharks and how to answer some of the questions they receive as divers and passionate shark lovers.
